The Definition of Hospice Care

Hospice worker exercising patient's legHospice is a multifaceted, multidimensional concept of care for the terminally ill and their loved ones. It is based upon the needs and desires of the individual client and their loved ones. The care is client-directed and oriented to enhance the life of the client and to support the family. This is known as full service Hospice care.

The goal of Hospice is to care for the patient and family, not to cure the illness. Compassionate care impacts the patient by relieving symptoms of the disease and by assisting the family members in coping with the care of their loved one.

Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death. Hospice exists in the hope and belief that through appropriate care, sensitive to the needs of the patient and their families, they will attain some degree of mental and spiritual preparation for death.
